Letters to Jabez Huntington, 1776.

Letter (7 Mar. 1776) from Jonathan Trumbull saying that Dr. Church complains of treatment from the prison keeper in Norwich and requests that he be moved to Windham; together with a letter (18 Apr. 1776) from Joseph Trumball in New York, asking that 500 bushels of salt for pickling pork and beef be sent and saying that flour can picked up by Huntington's son, Joshua.

Physician, poet, author, and traitor; b. Newport, R.I.; graduate of Harvard, 1754; lived in Boston and Raynham, Mass.; after correspondence with British was intercepted in 1775, he was tried by court martial. Continental Congress resolved on Nov. 6, that he should be imprisoned at Norwich, Conn., but because of illness was removed to Massachusetts and put on parole; allowed to sail from Boston in May 1776 for London but ship never heard from again; family was pensioned by the Crown. ...

Huntington, Joshua, 1751-1821

Joshua Huntington (1751-1821), the son of Jabez Huntington (1719-1786) who made his fortune in shipping, was born in Norwich, Conn. Joshua joined Putnam's brigade in 1775 and was later employed in securing shipping for the use of Continental troops. He is referred to in this collection as an "agent of the Continental Army," in charge of the transfer of wounded soldiers, arms, and supplies. From the description of Papers, 1742-1801.
